Before the First Freeze
October is the perfect time to take care of a few important jobs around the house before colder temperatures arrive. A little preventative maintenance now can help avoid inconvenient and sometimes, expensive problems this winter.
🍂 Clean Eavestroughs & Check Downspouts
Falling leaves can quickly clog gutters. Clear them out and make sure downspouts are directing water well away from your foundation.
💧 Disconnect Outdoor Hoses
Remove garden hoses, drain them and shut off exterior water supplies where applicable.👻 Water trapped in hoses or exterior plumbing can freeze and cause damage.
🔥 Give Your Furnace Some Attention
Replace or inspect your furnace filter and make sure your heating system is ready before you really need it. If it’s due for professional servicing, October is a good time to book it.
🚪 Find the Drafts
Check weather stripping around exterior doors and windows. Replacing worn seals is an inexpensive job that can make the house noticeably more comfortable once temperatures drop.
🏠 Do a Roof & Exterior Walk-Around
Look for damaged or missing shingles, deteriorating caulking, loose siding and other small exterior issues. They’re much easier to address now than in January.
💡 Did You Know👻?
One of the easiest ways to spot an air leak around a window or door is simply to run your hand slowly around the frame on a cool, windy day. If you can feel cold air coming through, your weather stripping or caulking may need attention.
A few small jobs in October can mean fewer surprises when winter arrives.👻

October is packed with fall fun throughout Peterborough, the Kawarthas and surrounding communities. From farm adventures and Thanksgiving weekend activities to pumpkins and Halloween, here are a few events worth adding to your calendar.

October 3–4, 10–11, 17–18 & 24–25 | 11 AM–5 PM
Make a day of it with pumpkin-patch wagon rides, corn and straw mazes, barnyard animals, a haunted forest and hallway, pumpkin bowling, a pumpkin cannon and plenty of family activities. Pumpkinfest runs Saturdays and Sundays throughout October, weather permitting.
🎡 Norwood Fair
Thanksgiving Weekend | Norwood
A classic local Thanksgiving-weekend outing and a good way to bring some traditional fall-fair flavour into this month’s event list. The Kawarthas Tourism’s fall schedule confirms the Norwood Fair for October 10.
🎃 Keene Pumpkin Festival

Celebrate fall in the village of Keene with a family-friendly day dedicated to all things pumpkin. It’s only about 15 minutes east of Peterborough and is one of the region’s signature October events.
👻 Spooky All Hallows’ Eve
October 23 & 24 | 6–9 PM | Lang Pioneer Village
Lang Pioneer Village transforms for Halloween with ghostly graveyards, witches’ lairs, fortune telling, tractor and wagon rides and other spooky activities while exploring the origins of Halloween traditions. It’s designed as an all-ages event.

A New👻Walmart Supercentre is Coming to Lindsay!

There’s some big news coming to Lindsay. Walmart Canada recently announced plans to build a new approximately 142,000-square-foot Supercentre at the northwest corner of Highway 35 and Sylvester Drive.
Expected to open in 2028, the store will anchor a new SmartCentres development and will include a full grocery selection, general merchandise, a pharmacy, Vision Centre, as well as in-store pickup and delivery services.👻
🏗️ Part of Lindsay’s Continued Growth
According to the City of Kawartha Lakes, the announcement follows years of planning and investment in infrastructure to accommodate Lindsay’s growing population.
New residential developments have brought more residents to the community, increasing demand for shopping and services. 👻The City says the Walmart and SmartCentres development is expected to create local jobs and provide residents with more shopping options closer to home.
The Lindsay location is also part of Walmart Canada’s broader $6.5-billion investment in its Canadian store and supply-chain network and is the fifth new Ontario Supercentre announced as part of that investment. What would you like to see more of?

🏡 Homeowner Tip of the Month
Before You Turn On the Heat: Get Your Home Fall-Ready!
September is the perfect time to give your home a quick check before cooler weather settles in. A little preventative maintenance now can help keep your home comfortable, improve efficiency and catch small problems before they become expensive winter repairs.
Your September Home Checklist ✔️✔️
Change your furnace filter
A clean filter helps your heating system operate efficiently and improves airflow throughout your home. If you haven’t changed yours recently, now is a great time.
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
As furnaces, fireplaces and other heating equipment come back into regular use, make sure your smoke and CO alarms are working properly and replace batteries if needed.
Check windows and exterior doors
Feel around windows and doors for drafts and inspect weather stripping for gaps or damage. Fixing small air leaks can make a noticeable difference in comfort once temperatures drop.
Inspect exterior vents
Check dryer, bathroom and furnace vents to make sure they’re clear of leaves, nests and other debris. Don’t forget to check them periodically once snow arrives too.
Take a look at your fireplace or chimney
If you use a wood-burning fireplace or stove, have it inspected and cleaned as required before your first fire of the season.
Walk around the outside of your home
Look for loose shingles, damaged siding, cracked caulking and areas where water may collect near the foundation. September is much nicer for dealing with these little jobs than November!
💡 Did You Know?
Heating and cooling account for a significant portion of the energy used in a typical Canadian home. Something as simple as replacing damaged weather stripping, keeping your furnace filter clean and sealing unwanted air leaks can help your home retain heat more effectively.
A few small jobs this September can help make your home warmer, safer and more efficient all winter long.

🌿 Community Small Business Spotlight 🌿

The Yoga Loft & Bobcaygeon Yoga
This month, we’re excited to shine our Community Small Business Spotlight on The Yoga Loft and Bobcaygeon Yoga, both owned by Joey Henderson.
Joey has been building community through yoga for nearly 15 years, first through the Yoga Loft and more recently through the unique, nature-inspired experiences she offers in Bobcaygeon.
We asked Joey a few questions about how it all began, what makes each location special, and what she would say to someone who has always been curious about yoga but hasn’t quite taken that first step.
Here’s what she had to say.
What inspired you to open the Yoga Loft, and how did Bobcaygeon Yoga come about?
I first found yoga in 2005 during a really stressful time in my life and career, and it quickly became something I knew I wanted to share with others.
When I purchased and reopened the Yoga Loft in 2012, I really wanted to create a space where people could come exactly as they are, feel welcomed, move, breathe, connect and hopefully leave feeling a little better than when they arrived.
Over the years, the Yoga Loft has grown into so much more than I ever imagined. It has become this beautiful community, and that has always been the heart of it for me.
Bobcaygeon came about a little more organically. I loved the idea of creating smaller, more intimate yoga experiences surrounded by nature, and the yurt gave me a completely different kind of space to do that.
It allowed me to blend yoga with other things I also love sharing, including sound, Reiki, restorative practices, the outdoors and slower, more immersive experiences. It feels like a natural extension of everything that has grown through the Yoga Loft over the years.
What makes the experience at each location different?
The Yoga Loft has wonderful community studio energy. There are different teachers, different styles of classes, workshops, teacher training and people coming and going throughout the week.
There is always something happening, and I love the relationships and connections that have grown there over the years.
Bobcaygeon feels quite different. The groups are smaller, the setting is quieter and more intimate, and being surrounded by nature naturally changes the pace of everything.
Experiences there can be a little longer and more immersive, with restorative yoga, sound baths, Reiki, time outside and sometimes even floating sound baths on the creek.
I love that they each offer something different, but the intention behind both spaces is really the same: to create a place where people feel comfortable, supported and connected.
What would you say to someone who’s curious about yoga but has never tried it, or doesn’t think they’re “a yoga person”?
I hear this all the time, and I always say the same thing: there really isn’t one type of “yoga person.”
People begin yoga for so many different reasons. Some are looking to improve flexibility, balance or strength. Some are dealing with stress, feeling overwhelmed, wanting to sleep better, recover from injury, move with less discomfort or simply carve out an hour for themselves.
Others may be looking for community, connection or a way to feel a little more grounded in their day-to-day life.
And you don’t have to be flexible, strong, calm or know anything about yoga before you begin. Those are often some of the very things that develop through practice.
I think one of the most important things to remember is that the benefits of yoga really begin to unfold when we return to it consistently. It doesn’t have to mean practicing every day. Even coming once or twice a week and allowing yourself to build a regular practice can create noticeable changes over time, physically, mentally and emotionally.
You begin to notice your balance improving, your body becoming stronger and more mobile, your breath becoming something you can actually use when you’re stressed, and often a greater awareness of what your body needs.
Sometimes the biggest changes are the quieter ones: how you respond to stress, how you sleep, how you feel in your own body, or simply having a space each week where you can slow down.
The biggest thing is finding the right class and teacher for where you are right now. You don’t need to keep up with anyone else, and you certainly don’t need to be able to touch your toes.
Just come as you are, begin where you are, and give yourself the opportunity to see what a consistent yoga practice might bring into your life.
🤍 What’s your favorite part about owning a small business in this community?
Without question, it’s the people and the relationships that have grown over the years.
I’ve had the privilege of watching people walk through the Yoga Loft doors for the first time feeling nervous or unsure, and then seeing yoga become an important part of their lives.
Some students have been with me for many years, some have gone on to become teachers themselves, and so many friendships and connections have grown within the studio.
After almost 15 years, there are so many stories woven into this little community. We’ve moved through happy seasons, difficult seasons and everything in between together.
Owning a small business can certainly be a lot of work, but knowing that you’ve created something that has become meaningful to people in your own community is pretty special. That is still the part I’m most grateful for.
A Space to Move, Breathe & Connect
What stood out to us most in speaking with Joey is how much both spaces are rooted in community.
Whether it’s the welcoming studio energy of the Yoga Loft or a quieter experience surrounded by nature in Bobcaygeon, Joey has created spaces where people can come as they are, feel supported, connect with others and take a little time for themselves.
Want to learn more about Joey, the classes, workshops and experiences offered at both locations?

👀 Something’s Happening on Chemong Road…

Anyone who grew up around Peterborough probably remembers Wild Water & Wheels, and after sitting vacant for years, there are signs that something new may finally be coming to the familiar Chemong Road property.
New Coming Soon signs have appeared at the former Wild Water & Wheels site, showing concepts for a new family entertainment destination. Early plans shown on the property include mini golf, batting cages, a kids’ zone, drive-in movies, paintball, rollerblading, food and more.
There’s no opening date or confirmed timeline yet, but it’s certainly caught the attention of locals who remember spending summer days there.
We’ll be watching this one!

🐾 PET OF THE MONTH: MEET GOOFY!

10 months old | Male | Large Mixed Breed | 72 lbs
Meet Goofy, a 10-month-old Large Mixed Breed who weighs about 72 lbs and is looking for his forever home!
True to his name, Goofy is a charming, lovable goofball who is ready to bring plenty of laughs, zoomies and puppy antics into someone’s life. At just 10 months old, he’s still very much a puppy, although at 72 lbs, the shelter jokes that welcoming Goofy home may feel a little like adopting a small horse!
Goofy is extremely treat-motivated, loves his plush toys and is always up for a good time. He’s looking for an energetic family who will help him learn the ropes, build his confidence and continue discovering what it means to be a puppy in this big, wide world.
He may still have a few things to learn, but one thing is guaranteed: Goofy will keep you laughing along the way!
Goofy would prefer to be the only dog in the home to start, although he may be able to have a doggy friend in the future. He is looking for a home without cats and would be best suited to a family with children aged 10 and older.
Goofy is neutered and currently available for adoption.
Adoption ID: 2000407972
❤️ More Than Adoptions
The Peterborough Humane Society does much more than help animals find new homes. In 2025 alone, 684 animals were adopted, 208 lost pets were reunited with their families, 4,605 spay and neuter surgeries were completed, and more than 22,000 lbs of pet food were distributed through their Social Services program. Their Pet Pantry and community outreach programs supported more than 2,600 people.
🐶 Can’t Adopt? You Can Still Help.
There are plenty of ways to make a difference without bringing another pet home.
Donate needed supplies
The Humane Society’s current wish list includes cat and dog food, cat litter, toys, Kongs, blankets, towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, garbage bags and other everyday necessities. They also accept gift cards and Canadian Tire Money. Their wish list is updated as their needs change.
Give your time
Volunteers help walk dogs, socialize cats, sort donations, greet visitors, do laundry and dishes, assist at events and much more. PHS currently accepts adult volunteers as well as youth ages 14–17 for certain behind-the-scenes roles.
Make a donation
Financial gifts help provide food, shelter and veterinary care. The Humane Society says it cares for more than 1,600 animals each year, and one-time and monthly giving options are available.
Help them get seen
Even liking, commenting on or sharing the Humane Society’s posts can introduce an adoptable animal to someone who may be looking for exactly that pet. PHS specifically identifies social sharing as one way people can help when adoption isn’t possible.

🏡 Homeowner Tip of the Month
Get Your Home Ready for Fall
Summer isn’t over yet, but August is the perfect time to tackle a few simple maintenance tasks before cooler weather arrives. Spending just an hour or two now can help prevent costly repairs and make the transition into fall much smoother.
✔️ This Month’s Checklist
– Trim branches away from your roof to help prevent damage during fall and winter storms.
– Clean your eavestroughs and downspouts so rainwater drains away from your home’s foundation.
– Inspect your deck for loose boards, railings, or signs of wear before another season of use.
– Book your annual furnace service before the busy fall rush arrives.
💡 Did You Know?
Many homeowners assume basement water problems are caused by foundation cracks, but that’s often not the case.
More commonly, moisture issues begin with clogged eavestroughs or poor grading around the home, allowing water to pool next to the foundation instead of draining away.
Keeping your gutters clear and ensuring water flows away from your home are two of the simplest and most effective ways to help prevent expensive water damage.
A little maintenance today can help protect your home all year long
